How Can A Book Change the World?

Proceds help the support the mission of D.R.E.A.M. Inc.

How can a self-help book change the world? It may seem hard to believe, but The Wake Up And Dream Challenge, a new book by Dr. Barbara Lavi, a psychologist licensed in CT and MA, can not only transform the lives of every reader, but also change the world. Dr. Lavi jokes that, “when you are born and raised in Texas, you learn to dream big.”

Her innovative book presents vivid stories demonstrating how Dr. Lavi helped her clients transform their lives and navigate their way to their dreams. Readers first learn to assess and evaluate their Dream Quotient (DQ). Then they are taught ways to unlock their Dream Potential. Finally, they are shown how to develop their own Dream Positioning System (DPS). It shows that whether you are young or old, working or unemployed, healthy or physically challenged, you can find your way to your dreams.

The book, however, is more than just a self-help book. Dr. Lavi has taken on a personal challenge to Dream It Forward and thereby, change the world. Because the book is being self-published on demand, Dr. Lavi will donate one half of the profits from every book sold to multiple charities. In this way, The Wake Up and Dream Challenge is like an everyman’s version of the billionaires’ challenge developed by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet. Dr Lavi has chosen twenty-one creative nonprofit organizations to be profiled in the book. D.R.E.A.M., Inc. (Dispelling Realities & Empowering African American Minds)  based in Union NJ is one of the organizations chosen from hundreds of applicants.

What all of the charities have in common is that they help people accomplish their dreams. The organizations featured in the book range from A Child Is Missing, to The Blind Judo Foundation, to HerShe, to Higher Ground to D.R.E.A.M.Inc. The populations served range from infants to the elderly, college students to formerly incarcerated men and women, veterans to cancer patients.

When Dr. Lavi spoke to Orane Williams D.R.E.A.M., Inc. she knew she wanted his story included in the book. In 2005, Orane Williams was a recent graduate from William Paterson University, where he had received his degree in Business Administration. He was looking for a job, and unclear of what he wanted to do with his life. Orane took a road trip with some friends to Gulfport, Mississippi.

During the ride, Orane read a book to pass the time. That book, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, led him on a journey he had not expected to take.  It discussed the difference between the two male figures in the author’s life who had raised him in very different ways. Rich Dad Poor Dad helped open Orane’s mind to new ideas and possibilities. Craving new answers led him to another book titled, Young, Fabulous, and Broke by Suze Orman. These two books offered him personal financial insight he had never learned while growing up.

All of a sudden, reading became Orane’s main mission. He strove to gain as much insight into various areas of life and finance as he possibly could. Intrigued in the midst of this quest for knowledge, Orane had an “aha” moment. He began to ‘see’ his mission. There was a void when it came to ‘financial literacy and understanding’ within the African-American community. Orane wanted to help fill that void.

Orane has become his own D.R.E.A.M. His example teaches all young people that, if you sincerely believe you can achieve, then you can do wonders with your life. D.R.E.A.M., Inc. now helps individuals across the country. By helping them become better dreamers, more financially prepared to make their lives a success, they also can become better members of their community. The workshops taught by D.R.E.A.M. are interactive. This helps participants relate to and become engaged not only by listening, but also by interacting with the presenters in the activities. D.R.E.A.M.’s future will include Orane’s continued travel across the United States and publications that will spread the message of financial literacy and entrepreneurship to young men and women around the country.
